Now all the promotional material like calenderers, banners, flyers, customized vinyl stickers, folders and decals can be printed at a reasonable price in a shorter period of time. But this has not always been the case. A historic overview of the printing world encompasses long tales of incessant efforts. The printing tools we are acquainted with today have come into existence through a series of experiments and modifications. A glance at history reveals the story of the initial uses of the printing press.

It has been debated by the critics that if the printing was an invention of the Buddhists of East Asia, a lot of history books have listed it. The worlds’ first printed file was a sutra that was printed in 750 A.D in Korea is utilizing a sheet of paper. The Buddhists in Japan published one million copies of the prayer which were handed over to the pilgrims. But that was an intricate task that was accomplished in six years time. The first printed book that came into sight was by the Tang Dynasty. Its length was 16-feet and it was put together by the leaves of paper that were affixed together. This book was found out in 1899 in a cave. The printing in that era was done by pressing the paper against the ink that was applied to a surface.

Printing in the tenth century was very wearisome as a lot of effort and time were consumed to carry out a job. Printing and typography took a new turn when movable type was introduced in China around 1040 A.D by Bi Sheng during the reign of the Song Dynasty. Writing and printing were greatly augmented by this new invention. In Korea the first typography system came into use in 1234.It was a metal movable type which required an exhaustive labor.

The East devoted constant efforts to improve the printing industry for about six centuries; after that Europe also paid attention towards the development of this enterprise. In the beginning the printing was limited to crafting images but later on the foundation of a printing press was laid down by John Gutenberg in the period 1439-1457. The economic escalation in Europe aided the progress of the printing industry. Different books turn up during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. In 1796 Lithography was invented by Alois Senefelder who was a German author and actor. In the beginning this technique was used for printing non expensive theatrical pieces. The simple chemical procedure is involved in lithography. A stone was used to shift the ink on the paper with an image imprinted into some oily stuff which was attached to the lithographic stone. In the initial years of the nineteenth century lithography didn’t receive the desired recognition but in the twentieth century artists like Pablo Picasso used this technique in perking up the art.

Screen printing is a patterning printing technique that was popular in China in the beginning of the eleventh century. But it was later amended and developed by other Asian countries and in the eighteenth century this process made its way to Europe but did not gain a wider acclaim because the silk lattice used in this technique was largely available in east. The CMYK color model got developed due to this procedure; numerous colors can be stirred using the 4 screens which cut down the costs and time to a considerable level.

Chester Carlson is credited with the invention of electrophotography which is now called Xerox. This evolution laid the underpinning for the laser and digital printing. The first laser jet printer was built in 1969 by the Xerox researcher Gary Starkweather which paved the way for the recent innovations in the print industry. The inks and cartridges which we work with today are highly efficient and can be employed for various printing products. The digital and offset printing has turned the customized printing and advertising into an exciting endeavor. A lot of innovation in digital printing is impending which will open a new horizon for the printers and advertisers.

During that period sticky ‘backed paper’ was in the process which was made available to the marketing people. This paper had an easy application. The backing was removed and the paper was affixed to the surface. This created an evolution in sticker printing because before that silk screen stickers were used which were not weather resistant and used to get smashed after a small period of time. Gill came to know about door to door advertising which just started during those days. He contacted the marketing company and asked for their services for his bumper stickers. That company helped Gill developing a campaign for his bumper stickers, which proved really useful in getting him huge sales turnover for his stickers. People bought these stickers because after war a lot of people purchased cars and these stickers became a memento to them. The first bumper stickers were printed with incandescent ink using black and blue backgrounds and the text of these stickers usually represented a place of vacationing. Gill placed his company’s name and logo on the lowest part of these stickers which later on was adapted to promote one’s business and products.
